Job Introduction

The BBC is a world-class digital broadcaster and BBC Northern Ireland has made a major contribution to that development along with the introduction of state of the art production, editing, transmission and business reporting systems. This has been made possible by the expertise of our converged broadcast and IT technologists working closely with production teams; combined with a strong, professional management team.

The BBC Rewind project aims to realise the value of a considerable volume of stills, video, text and audio assets that have been created by the BBC since 1922 while focusing on innovation and partnerships to ensure that maximum public value is created in the most cost-efficient and scalable way. The project will “surface” the best of these assets throughout the BBC’s online product portfolio, both on and off It is a complex project with many dependencies across a variety of BBC departments and divisions.

We are looking for 2 experienced and enthusiastic developers to join our expanding innovation team on fixed term contracts for 6 months. These roles sit within the new Belfast based Technology Innovation Group and report to the Senior Product Manager. The Technology Innovation Group is responsible for delivering a programme of work that is maximising the value from the BBC’s world leading News TV/Radio/Text Archive. Multiple solutions will be delivered from innovative internal journalist research tooling to archive video rich external audience experiences. The programme will enable the BBC to elevate and enhance its storytelling capability in the News domain.

Role Responsibility

Liaise with the Senior Product Manager to ensure that all technical possibilities are explored and that products achieve the best possible look, feel and functionality
To establish good working relationships with colleagues and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team in order to understand and deliver to their business requirements
To build world class object-orientated applications using JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3
Assist in the design and build of all front-end components (presentation, templating, client-side behaviour, integration to data services etc.)
The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have the following skills:

In depth knowledge of the design and implementation of complex web applications using OO JavaScript, HTML, CSS and Ajax (JSON /XML/ XHTML).
Excellent front-end web development skills: HTML5 - Semantic markup patterns for flexible reuse; CSS / SCSS - Good understanding of modern techniques such as Responsive Web Design and graceful degradation for older browsers; JAVASCRIPT - Excellent JavaScript programming skills, with knowledge of developing large, modular applications using frameworks/libraries such as AngularJS, Backbone
Experience of working in a linux-based development environment
Experience of working with MongoDB or similar
